Divergent

For those of you that haven't joined in on the dystopian society craze, Veronica Roth's Divergent is the newest series of the genre to be made into a movie. The first of the trilogy, Divergent, came out last Friday and I went to the movies with my sister to see it. I'm not usually one to see the movie before reading the book, but my sister insisted we go.

The basic premise of the movie starts off like any other dystopia (cough cough, The Hunger Games). It is years after some devastating war and the new government decided to separate the city from the country, by installing a huge fence, keeping the people in. They also divided the population into 5 factions: abegnation (selflessness), erudite (intelligence), candor (honesty), amity (peaceful), and dauntless (brave). Beatrice Prior (Shailenne Woodley) is from abegnation, but knows she doesn't belong. When it comes time for her test to help her decide which faction to join, Beatrice scores abegnation, erudite, and dauntless, making her a divergent and a mortal enemy of the government. She keeps the results of her test private for the sake of her life, and chooses dauntless, leaving her parents and her brother behind. Beatrice has to fight to keep her place in dauntless and becomes close with a dauntless trainer, Four (Theo James). As the government becomes more determine to eradicate divergents, Beatrice has to blend in. Soon, the erudite faction takes over the others and Beatrice and Four have to save the day.

Overall, it's a great movie. I didn't really know what to expect at first because I figured it would be the same as The Hunger Games, but it was still its own story. I really enjoyed Beatrice's determination and her will to fight for what is right. And of course, I couldn't deal with how awesome Beatrice and Four are together. Miles Teller also starred in the movie as comic relief for such an intense plot. He was hilarious and probably my favorite part of the movie with his snarky comments about Beatrice. I can't wait to start reading the book; I'm sure the rest of the series will be just as great. So, if you haven't seen the movie yet, get off your butt and go watch it! You won't be disappointed.

Pinterest Products I Wish I Had

I don't know about you, but a have like a million pins, varying from my future wedding with the man I have yet to meet to my dream closet of incredibly awesome clothes that I could never afford. I have to say though, my favorite board that I have is my product board. It has all these cool gadgets I could use in my life and that I totally need to have. It's come to the point where I go on Pinterest just to find cool products. I seriously want everything; I'm just too poor to get them. Without further ado, here is my awesome product list:

I love breathing in fresh air, especially on stuffy days when you can't just open a window. This cap can turn any bottle into a humidifier. It's great for those times you have a cold or a stuffy nose, too!

I love infusing my water for a refreshing, cool taste to spice up my day. With this water bottle, you can put fruits, herbs, or whatever you want into the bottom compartment and it will diffuse with the water, creating a perfect blend of freshness.
Okay, this has to be the coolest toaster ever invented. As a future health professional, this thing rocks my socks. You literally take paddles to the bread and "shock" it to life! I want this so bad; I can't describe it.

"We all infuse our teas with a yellow submarine" . . .wait, those aren't the lyrics. But hey, this is so awesome, too. Not only can you be an ultimate Beatles fan with your memorabilia, you can diffuse your tea leaves in the best way possible. You can't deny the greatness of this as a conversational piece and its use.
I love, love, love yogurt and never have time to eat breakfast, so this on-the-go yogurt cup is the best. It has a separate compartment up top for mix ins like fruit and granola. It's reusable and dishwasher safe, so there is not reason not to get this.

I feel like when I go to the beach, I never have anywhere to put my stuff. This pillow/ organizer makes it easy to relax at the beach and protect your electronics and money from being stolen from an open bag or covered in sand. Plus, the pillow makes it comfy to lay out in the sun.

This bowl is genius. It can hold a liquid on one side and something else in the other. It's perfect for chips and dip, crackers and soup, veggies and dressing, and so many other combinations.
For any of you living in the colder states, especially New England, an ice scraper is essential in the winter. This scraper has battery-operated energy heating the scraper head to melt off the ice and facilitate a quicker clean up. This would be so great for the mornings I am running late.
I am a big fan of tea, but sometimes, I forget about a mug and the tea goes cold. I hate putting it in the microwave because you have to play a game between not getting it too hot, but not making it cool. This heated stirrer increases the temperature when the beverage when  it starts getting cool, so you never have to worry about your drink's temperature again.

I have a slight obsession with froyo. I love the fresh taste, but I hate having to go out and get it. With this frozen yogurt maker, you can add any fruit or flavoring you want to create your own frozen treat! Just the picture of this makes my mouth water.

The Best Pyramid Workout You've Never Tried

Okay, maybe I'm a little biased because I made this pyramid, but hey, it's that good! Pyramids are great workout in general because you can build your body up physically without killing yourself. You can start with a small pyramid and increase it as you get stronger and faster.

For my pyramids, I like to start with the highest number of reps and work my way down so it gets easier as I become tired. It's like cheating without actually cheating! I usually do a ten level pyramid, but you can alter this to a 3, 5, 7, or whatever level pyramid. It's best to do it as a 10 level pyramid because it works your entire body for a decent amount of time and you are doing the same amount for every exercise.

You'll definitely be feeling sore in the morning after this workout! Try it out and let me know what you think!

The Best Irish Punk You Will Ever Hear

Nothing's better on St. Patty's Day than beer, friends, and awesome drinking songs, and no better place to celebrate than Boston itself. When you're from Boston like I am, there's no better songs to celebrate the holiday than those by The Dropkick Murphys! The Dropkick Murphys formed as an American Celtic Punk band in 1996 in Quincy, Massachusetts. They first began touring locally and at St. Patrick's Day festivals. They became popular from their songs, "I'm Shipping Up to Boston" in 2005 and "Tessie" in 2005. These songs represent the spirit of the Irish and Bostonians alike, serving as anthems for several sport teams and on theatrical soundtracks.

"I'm Shipping Up to Boston" has been used in countless commercials from Disney's Brave to Sam Adams' lagers. This song is the definition of Irish pride and is the crowning jewel of drinking songs. I love to listen to this when I workout of go for runs because it really pumps you up and makes you feel invincible. It's awesome, basically. Listen for yourself:

Dropkick's other hit, "Tessie", is actually a cover of a song of the same name by the Royal Rooters. The Rooters' song was originally the anthem of Fenway Park that helped the Red Sox (formerly known as the Boston Americans) win the World Series in 1903. Dropkick wanted to bring back the Rooters' spirit to the Red Sox in early 2004, which happened to be the year they won the World Series for the first time in 86 years. The song became the Red Sox's song and was put in the movie, Fever Pitch, with Jimmy Fallon and Drew Barrymore. You can't not listen to this song and feel happy.

I hope you love these songs as much as I do. Whether it's St. Patty's, or you are just looking for a great time, listen to the Dropkick Murphys! Have a great St. Patty's and be safe!

St. Patty's Outifts

Whether you're Irish or not, St. Patrick's Day is not taken lightly. From temporary hair dye to Kiss Me I'm Irish T shirts, and  everything in between, St Patty's has become quite the fashion holiday, too. While some go all out crazy for parades and keggers, other people go for more subtle hints of green for work and dinner parties. I've got 3 outfits for that will suit your needs on the scale of college party to dinner party.

College Party/Blarney Blowout - type Party
Stitches Boston Red Sox St. Patrick’s Day Pullover Hoodie - Kelly Green

Nothing's better than a nice warm sweatshirt in New England in March! For all you Sox fans out there, show your Boston pride and Irish lovin' with this sweatshirt from Fanatics.com!

For those lucky enough to live in warmer weather, here's a festive pick for you! You find it on American Eagle!

School/Work Appropriate

This top from Old Navy has the perfect balance of festive and appropriate. It's not too flashy or "trashy", it's just right.

This jacket from American Eagle also works for school too. It's a little edgy and a little less green for those of you that want to maintain your chic style but still celebrate the day.

Dinner Party Worthy

This Dress is so classy and so festive. It will wow all your fellow partygoers! You can find it at Macy's!

For a slightly more casual look, this maxi is great for a party. The navy stripes accent the green and make it look like you didn't try hard to wear green! You can find it at Macy's!

Healthy Packaged Snacks

photo 1.JPG

photo 2.JPGWhen it comes to eating healthy, eating packaged snacks is like making a deal with the Devil. It's the gateway to cake and ice cream. The horror! Not all processed and packaged food are your enemy. In one of my many trips to Target last week (I practically live there), I saw Angie's Boom Chicka Pop white cheddar popcorn and I was like, "Is this heaven?"  It's just like Smartfood, but with better nutritional values. It has less carbohydrates and calories, but still has that delicious cheesy flavor.

photo 3.JPGAs I continued to walk down the snack aisle, I found my favorite chocolate candies. I could hear the twix bars calling my name, but I picked up Brookside's dark chocolate covered goji with raspberry flavors. I had tried the blueberry and pomegranate ones before and loved them, so I grabbed the goji ones to try. They are so addicting! I never knew that something chocolatey could be healthy for you! It comes in a resealable bag, so they are the perfect snack for on the go; you can just stick the bag in your purse!

My final purchase was Snackwell's fudge drizzled caramel popcorn. Just the name of the snack makes my mouth water. Each package is 130 calories and gives you a good enough amount that you feel satisfied after eating, especially when eating it with water. This snack is great for lunches or if you are running errands and need a quick pick me up in between meals. Snackwell also has white and milk chocolate covered pretzel and caramel drizzled popcorn, so you can vary your snacking!
photo 4.JPG

Overall, the snacks are very delicious! My only con of them is that they are more expensive, so it isn't easy to eat healthy on a budget, but they weren't outrageously priced! If you are looking for more healthy packaged snacks, definitely check Target's snack aisle. They have the junk food there too, but you can tell by the packaging usually if it's healthy. If you know of any other healthy snacks worth trying, let me know in the comments!

Feminism: Why We Should Care

Today's post a very serious post. Over the years, feminism has become the punch lines of many jokes. Any woman that protests her rights for equality must be a tree hugging, free spirited lesbian that wants to outlaw women from being the homemaker and the house wife. This stereotype is far from true. With all the negative press feminism gets, it's no wonder people don't take it seriously. But the truth is, it is so important.

The Department of Justice estimates that between 300,000 and 1.3 million women are raped every year, with 54 percent of rapes not being reported. The chance that a woman will be raped is 1 in 5. There is a 1 in 4 college females will be raped. That is scary. Women are being taken advantage of and people are more concerned about the political and economical implications of equality and women's rights. Many blame the women for the horrendous crimes committed against them, saying that the way they dress provokes men or that their bodies can just "shut the whole thing down". The victims are being blamed for the crimes and are ostracized for speaking out against their attackers. This unfortunately happens all too often and makes women afraid to report the crimes.

We need educate the old and new generations about the importance of the treatment of women. Women are not seen as passionate, dedicated leaders in the workforce; they are obsessive, selfish, and bossy. It's the woman's fault that she is assaulted because she dresses a certain way or that it is okay for coworkers to sexually harass her. While it's not as common in the States, there is a silent epidemic of human trafficking of young, aspiring female dancers. They are taken and sold to become sex slaves and exotic dancers, disappearing from their former lives. The events in Taken actually do happen every day, with most not having an ass kicking bodyguard for a dad who can save them. With relaxed values of sex in our culture and the increase of risky sexual situations shown in the media, our society portrays women in a vulnerable and sensual way that subconsciously and consciously encourages men to take advantage of women and not take no for an answer.

I found these videos online that show the need for empowered, independent women and a society that cares more for women's rights and their portrayal. These videos can motivate us all to work together to fight for women and share the need for modern feminism.

Sarah Fit - Get Skinny Again!

If you haven't heard of Sarah Dussault yet, you soon will be. Sarah is a health and fitness guru from Boston. She is a certified personal trainer that has made getting young women back into shape her mission. Back in college, Sarah struggled with her fitness and keeping off the freshman 15, leading her to start her blog, Sarah Fit, and her YouTube channel, Sarah Fit.

Recently, Sarah wrote a book, Sarah Fit - Get Skinny Again, for college girls to get their bodies back in shape after gaining weight from the dining halls. The book is full of workout routines, meal ideas, and juice recipes to Get Skinny Again! From cardio workouts, ab exercises, and stretching techniques to yummy breakfast recipes and healthy weight loss advice, Sarah really makes it easy to get in shape and stay fit. A few weeks ago, I was lucky enough to be contacted by Sarah to do a review of her book!

If you couldn't tell already, I love the book! The book is split into 3 sections: fitness workouts, eating clean, and living the fit life. She makes getting and staying healthy simple with tips for healthy eating, keeping yourself on track, motivating you, and countless workouts to do. I'm always looking for new exercise routines to spice up my gym time and I find this book perfect for that. She literally has a workout for whatever you are trying to improve. You want a firmer butt? Try her workout plan, Lift Your Butt, and repeat her 5 simple moves for a booty like Beyoncé. You want to get stronger? Follow her three different options for strength training. Not only does she have workouts for the gym, she has many you can do at home. Only have 10 minutes? There are no more excuses that you don't have time to workout because Sarah has several different workouts that take 10 minutes or less.

Me doing the Physioball Jacknifes
My sister and I tried one of her 10 minute workouts, Flat Abs, and let me tell you, I felt the burn. There are 8 moves to this workout:
  • Forearm Plank, 1 minute
  • Toe Touches, 20 reps
  • Physioball Jacknifes, 20 reps
  • Shin Slaps, 10 each side
  • Physioball Pikes, 10 reps
  • Forearm Plank, 1 minute
  • Teasers, 8
  • Scissors, 20 crisscrosses

My sister doing the shin slaps
I was still sore a couple days after I did this workout; that's how good it is! I have added to my workout routine so I can get awesomely defined abs like Sarah has. It's hard to do some of the exercises, like the physioball ones. It takes a little practice to balance yourself on the ball before even starting the exercise.

Overall, I highly recommend Sarah's book. She knows a lot about health and fitness, but keeps it simple for those of us who need help to get healthy. Anyone who is looking for a little help in the fitness department should get this book and become a pro at shaping your body. You can find her book at Barnes and Noble and Amazon! It makes the perfect gift for your girlfriends or a special treat for yourself!

Paris (Oh La La) - Grace Potter & The Nocturnals

If you are looking for a great new song to listen to, definitely check out Grace Potter & The Nocturnals. The band began in Waitsfield, Vermont in 2002 by drummer Matt Burr, guitarist Scott Tournet, and singer Grace Potter. They started as an indie band, self-producing their albums, but then signed with Hollywood Records in 2005. The band now consists of Grace Potter, Matt Burr, Scott Tournet, guitarist Benny Yurco and bassist Michael Libramento. The band has played at countless venues, clubs, and music festivals, even before they made it big. They have 4 albums out currently. The first, Original Soul, and the second, Nothing But the Water, were released in 2004 and 2005, respectively. This is Somewhere, released in 2007, hit number 1 on the US Heat chart. Grace Potter and the Nocturnals peaked at number 19 on the US Charts and number 3 on the US Rock Charts. Their latest album, The Lion The Beast The Beat, was released in June 2012 and peaked at 17 on the US Chart.

"Paris" was released on Potter's self-titled album and peaked at number 20 on the US Adult Pop Chart. This song is one of my favorites. It came out a few years ago, but I never get tired of it. Grace Potter literally rocks out in "Paris". Upon first sight, you'd think that this song is a lovey-dovey ballad, but it is anything but that. Potter uses awesome electric guitar riffs and bass to make this song super catchy. It's the perfect balance of sass and rock and roll to appeal to any audience.

I Suck at Apologies

I know it's been a long while since I posted on here and there are no excuses, but I'm going to give them anyway. Here's my lame list of why I have been neglecting The Daily Doozy:

1. It's my senior year
This is by far my worst excuse, but it's true. I have been so busy with college stuff and applying for scholarships, that I really haven't had time for anything.

2. It's the middle of the quarter

Progress reports came out last week, so I have been busting my butt trying to keep up with the extra work and assessments my teachers piled on. Let's just say I'm still not caught up.

3. Physics.

This class is literally the death of me. I hate the teacher, the material, and most of all, the mountains of homework I have every night because of it. Like I don't already have enough to do on top of 30 energy calculation problems and mixed review questions. Damn you, Newton.

4. I have a procrastination complex

When I don't do something until the last minute (which is often) and end up not finishing it, I generally don't complete it and do not do any successing things because I haven't done the first. This is partly why it's been more than a week since my last post.

And Finally. . .

5. I am a freaking stressball

-I literally don't know what to do with myself, ever. I'm freaking out all the time and feeling so pressured that I swear I'm going to have a Myocardial Infarction. (Bonus points to whoever knows what that is! #futuredoctoralert #sciencerules) When I'm stressed, I can't think or function. It's the worst. And, I'm waiting to hear back from my top colleges these next few weeks, so basically I'm dying.

These excuses can't make up for this, but, I'm trying. All in all, I'd like to apologize for my absence and try to make it up to you. This week I'm going to publish 2 posts each day. It's the best I can do.

I also am making a few changes to the blog. Because i underestimated how much my life will take away from blogging, I am changing my posting schedule. I will continue to post here daily, but from now on, it will only be during the week. To make up for the loss of Saturday and Sunday, I'm slightly changing the post types in my schedule. Mondays are now Music and Movie Mondays, dedicated to music and movies (obviously). Thursdays are now Thirsty Thursdays and dedicated to food. Fridays will be Fashion Fridays, dedicated to style and beauty posts.
So the new schedule is:

Music and Movie Monday
Training Tuesday
Wicked Wednesday
Thirsty Thursday
Fashion Friday

Thank you for your understanding and for sticking with me. I promise to try my hardest to stick to this routine. I think it will be much more manageable. If you have any requests for posts like reviews, inspiration ideas, or advice, let me know in the comments or send me an email at thedailydoozy@gmail.com!

Stay tuned these next couple weeks because I have some great content planned. (Here's a hint: I have a collaboration and a special review in the works!)
