Paris (Oh La La) - Grace Potter & The Nocturnals

If you are looking for a great new song to listen to, definitely check out Grace Potter & The Nocturnals. The band began in Waitsfield, Vermont in 2002 by drummer Matt Burr, guitarist Scott Tournet, and singer Grace Potter. They started as an indie band, self-producing their albums, but then signed with Hollywood Records in 2005. The band now consists of Grace Potter, Matt Burr, Scott Tournet, guitarist Benny Yurco and bassist Michael Libramento. The band has played at countless venues, clubs, and music festivals, even before they made it big. They have 4 albums out currently. The first, Original Soul, and the second, Nothing But the Water, were released in 2004 and 2005, respectively. This is Somewhere, released in 2007, hit number 1 on the US Heat chart. Grace Potter and the Nocturnals peaked at number 19 on the US Charts and number 3 on the US Rock Charts. Their latest album, The Lion The Beast The Beat, was released in June 2012 and peaked at 17 on the US Chart.

"Paris" was released on Potter's self-titled album and peaked at number 20 on the US Adult Pop Chart. This song is one of my favorites. It came out a few years ago, but I never get tired of it. Grace Potter literally rocks out in "Paris". Upon first sight, you'd think that this song is a lovey-dovey ballad, but it is anything but that. Potter uses awesome electric guitar riffs and bass to make this song super catchy. It's the perfect balance of sass and rock and roll to appeal to any audience.

Oscar Nominated Songs

In case you haven't guessed by the title, it's Oscar Week here on The Daily Doozy! With just one week leading up to the big night, I am dedicating my blog to all things Oscar-related. Today's post is all about the Oscar nominated original songs! I've listened to all of them and I really like them. I even dedicated a post to Frozen, which has the song "Let It Go" up for the award. The songs are a really good listen and you should definitely check them out. Here's a preview of the songs. Look out for these songs and this award next Sunday night!

1. "Happy" - Pharrell Williams
This song is in Despicable Me 2 and was written and performed by Pharrell. To be honest, I'm not a huge fan of this song because I work at a children's clothing store and literally all of the music sounds like this. (It drives me insane).  It has a good beat, though.

2. "The Moon Song" - Karen O. and Ezra Koenig
This song was written by Karen O. and Spike Jonze for the movie, Her and performed by Karen and Ezra Koenig. It has a very lyrical quality to it and tells a tale of love. It's nice and relaxing to listen to.

3. "Ordinary Love" - U2

Pretty much any song by U2 is awesome and "Ordinary Love" is no exception. It has such a powerful message relevant to today's struggles of equality and rights that also is strung thematically through the entire movie, Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom. This song won the Grammy for best original song and I'm sure it will win again, especially since it was written for the film about the late Nelson Mandela. 

4. "Let It Go" - Idina Menzel

This is by far my favorite song of the bunch. (I am a Disney girl at heart.) It may be from a children's animated film, but dammit, it's a great song and a great movie. It starts off slow, but it really builds and it's just epic like all the Disney movies. If I could pick the winner of this category, I would pick this song because not only does it send a great message to kids about being yourself, it is different than the usual songs picked and really encapsulates the entire movie and breaks the Disney stereotypes. I seriously could go on about this forever, but I think the song says it all. (Check out the version sung in 25 different languages, too!

Ben Rector

I know this is a day late, but I was super busy this weekend visiting a friend at her college. But better late than never! Today's artist is Ben Rector. I'm many of you have never heard of him before. He is a Nashville-born singer-songwriter who began his career in 2006. After releasing a self-titled EP which won the John Lennon Songwriting contest and two full length albums, his third studio album, Into The Morning, peaked at #5 on iTunes pop chart and #10 on the iTunes overall chart. His fourth album did even better, topping the singer-songwriter chart on iTunes. He then went on tour with Needtobreathe in 2011 and released a fifth album, The Walking in Between.

I found Rector on iTunes when his song "Beautiful" was the free song of the week on iTunes. It is such a pretty song and it tells a story which is something I love about songs. If you want to learn more about Ben, check out his website. Here is "Beautiful".

Top 6: Breakup Songs

You know what time of year it is . . . Valentine's Day. While some have their special someone, many of us are spending this corporate holiday solo. I'm not a bitter person, but I really can't stand this time of year because couples become these sappy, sickly sweet annoyances that gush over how "in love" they are. *starts gagging*

I love listening to these breakup songs because they make me feel so powerful and independent. They're like "I don't need a man to be happy, I can make myself happy." I think that's a really powerful message that  many girls do not understand. Not to mention, these songs have catchy tunes that make you feel so good when you belt it out at the top of your lungs. From old school Wilson Phillips to Taylor Swift, the queen of breakup songs, it's an eclectic mix of songs. Here are my favorite Breakup songs.

Young The Giant

If you haven't heard of Young The Giant already, you soon will be. The American Indie rock band formed in 2004 in Irvine, CA under the name of The Jakes, but have been rocking out as Young The Giant since late 2009. Since the name change, the band consists of Sameer Gadhia (lead vocals), Jacob Tilley (guitar), Eric Cannata (guitar), Payam Doostzadeh (bass guitar), and François Comtois (drums). 



In 2011,, they released their self titled album with the track "My Body" and in 2013 released Mind Over Matter with the track "It's About Time". 

I love the vibes of both of their singles. "My Body" is so upbeat and powerful that it makes you want to get up and dance along with the song. It's one of my go to workout songs! "It's About Time" is darker, but it still has a catchy tune. You should definitely listen to the songs below and get the full albums on iTunes. 

They begin their tour in Ventura, CA on Tuesday and end on April 11 in Las Vegas. Check out their website to find a concert near you and listen to their other songs.

Delta Rae

Hello! So, for the first Song Sunday ever, I thought I would feature a relative newcomer: Delta Rae. They are an American folk rock band that formed at Duke University in 2009. The band is made up of 3 siblings: Ian Hölljes (vocals and guitar), Eric Hölljes (vocals, guitar, piano and keys) and Brittany Hölljes (vocals), as well as Elizabeth Hopkins (vocals), Mike McKee (percussion) and Grant Emerson (bass guitar). They released their self-titled EP in 2010 and released their debut album Carry The Fire in 2012. On November 19th, they released the EP Chasing Twisters and plan to release a second album later this year.

I came across their single "Run" and I love it. It has such an upbeat tune and positive lyrics that make it very catchy. I hope more people hear how awesome Delta Rae is so they become successful and make it on the radio. I think it is only a matter of time before they become mainstream. Maybe "Run" will be one of the songs of the summer! You should definitely visit their website. They are on tour right now until the end of April, so if you can, check them out.
